Hey RVAers, hope you’ve been enjoying our new weekly section with the top weekend events, drink of the week, and other happenings about town. If you haven’t, then I suggest you take that up with HR. Or just send us an email letting us know what you’d like to see each week!

For the hermits that didn’t make it to Cha Cha’s Cantinas’ 6th annual bartending competition finals on Monday, you missed out. There were drinks slinging left and right and lots of flair and fancy tricks taking place. But lucky for you we have the lowdown on the event and some pictures that you can check out. Off the Hookah bartender extraordinaire Nahuel Frumboli took home the $1,000 prize. He was up against fierce drink slingers from Tiki Bobs, Cha Cha’s, Station 2, the Richmond Bartending Academy, Bailey’s Pub and Grille and Havana 59. The three-week competition raised over $4,000 for Connor’s Heroes Foundation according to its Facebook page. Guess RVA loves its booze.

Feeling a little blue? Need something a little cold and frothy to take the edge off? Capital Ale House downtown just kicked off its After Work Brews and Blues Show for those looking to cool down from the summer heat and the daily 9 to 5 grind. Every Friday tap your feet to some free music from 5 to 8 p.m. brought to by the River City Blues Society.

Speaking of brews, tonight and every Thursday night this summer a food truck court will gather at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery on Ownby Lane from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. You are familiar with the food court concept if you’ve ever stepped food inside a mall I assume, well this is the same concept, but with food carts. Sample food from carts and trucks like Thai Cabin, Pizza Tonight, Boka Truck and many others. No outside alcohol allowed, bummer, but check Hardywood’s website for some of its new tasty brews that will be featured!  Free event. http://www.hardywood.com/content/food-truck-court-comes-hardywood-1

Keeping with the beer theme, August is Virginia Craft Beer Month so be sure to check the site each week next month for awesome beer-related events going on about town you don’t want to miss out!

Now for your favorite part, the drink of the week. This one’s called Devil’s Handshake and it’s not for the faint-livered either. http://www.drinkoftheweek.com/drink_recipes/devil%E2%80%99s-handshake/

    • 1 ½ parts Hornitos Plata tequila
    • ¾ parts lime juice
    • ½ part simple syrup
    • 1 part pineapple juice
    • 1 tsp sweet ginger puree
    • ¼ part egg white

Cheers,

Amy David
